Sailing in Tanzania

When deciding to take an African holiday ending with a trip to South Africa, to see the splendour and magnificent scenery the southernmost country offers, combined with its diverse population and cultures, on the way there, stop and spend time in Tanzania, formerly Tanganyika.

Tanzania is the perfect complement to South Africa as a dual-centre holiday. Tanzania is the ideal country for relaxing and switching off from the hustle and bustle of usual daily routine. Lying lazing in the sun on stretches of lovely white sandy beaches fringed with palm trees, sailing among the Spice Islands, or snorkeling in the coral reefs, offers you an ideal place to spend a week or two, before setting off for the interesting destinations in South Africa.

With the largest concentration of wild animals and Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, most of the year snow capped, the national parks and game reserves, contrast of the city and port life of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania is a most interesting country to visit and is the gateway to East and Central Africa.

Most sailing holidays in Tanzania begin in Dar es Salaam the capital. Yachts and catamarans are available for charter, suitably crewed for the desired length of time.

There’s a lengthy coastline on the Indian Ocean to be explored as well as a number of islands. The Swahili coast is stunningly beautiful and has history deep in the roots of the ancient spice trade. Divers enjoying a spot of sailing in Tanzania will be especially interested in Mnazi Bay, Mtwara.

North of Dar es Salam is the Zanzibar Archipelago. The exotic reputation of Zanzibar is built on fact. The three main islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia are tropical paradises people see in their dreams - stunning white sand beaches bordered by swaying palms, washed by crystal blue waters. Pemba is a true tropical escape of deserted beaches and endless days of nothing to do but enjoy. Pemba is the ideal spot for honeymooners to leave the boat and spend some special secluded time on cashmere soft sands.

Stop off at Mafia Island, which really is the most beautiful of the islands in the Zanzibar Archipelago, with excellent scuba diving and snorkelling sites, coral reefs and friendly helpful villagers, being the inspiration for making your stay in this tropical paradise most enjoyable and memorable. A bonus for your holiday is the pods of playful dolphins which often frequent this area, and love to entertain and delight visitors.

Tanzania is very keen on preservation of their marine life and marine conservation, and community development projects are ongoing, with constant assessment of the conditions of the coral reefs a priority.

Certainly, this country offers ocean life at its best, providing so much to see and do for tourists who enthuse in nature and have a love for sailing. Enjoy the oceans of Tanzania and then, move on to your next set of adventures in South Africa.
